Lion Foundation Netball Champs - Day Three Review

Lion Foundation Netball Champs - Day Three Review

2 October 2013

The Semi-Finalists have been found at the Lion Foundation Netball Champs in Dunedin with Christchurch to play Hamilton, while defending champions Otago A will take on the undefeated Auckland side.

It was a busy day of action at the Edgar Centre with all twelve teams playing their two final matches of pool play. Hamilton started today’s mission with a 67-38 win over Waitakere and confirmed their spot in the semi’s with a 56-33 win over Southland in the early evening. The defensive end were impressive for Hamilton causing all sorts of headaches for the Southland shooters.

Hamilton’s Jodi Beaumont, Jo Trip and wing defence Kathryn Coffin forced Southland into too many mistakes under pressure which proved costly. Hamilton goal shooter, 1.92 metre tall Elsa Brown proved an easy target for the Hamilton attacking mid-court and finished with shooting stats of 37/40 converting to 92%.

Southland finish fourth in Pool B with two defeats on Day Three and will play Wellington in their match tomorrow.

Also in Pool B, Waitakere bounced back from their early morning loss to Hamilton to defeat Manawatu in a close contest 44-41.

Across in Pool A, Wellington just missed out a semi’s berth after a mixed day with a narrow win over North Harbour 54-50, and a tough encounter against Christchurch to drop out of top four contention. In the final round of the day Christchurch’s experience and raw skill was too much for Wellington despite giving it 100%. Wellington will play in the middle section in the play-offs where they will be playing for fifth spot overall.

Schedule for Thursday:

11.30am Counties Manukau v Centre Invitational

1.30pm Wellington v Southland

1.30pm Manawatu v Otago B

3.30pm Auckland v Otago A

3.30pm Waitakere v North Harbour

5.30pm Christchurch v Hamilton
