‘Health for Humanity’ Yogathon grows bigger

Yogathon New Zealand is organising a nationwide ‘Health for Humanity’ Yogathon from 12 to 26 October 2013. This is the third consecutive year of the Yogathon event - collective practise of Surya Namaskar (Sun Salutations) - in New Zealand.

Yogathon aims to create awareness about Yoga and its health benefits. During the two-week long national event, a cumulative total of 108,000 repetitions of Surya Namaskars, a sequence of simple yoga postures, are expected to be performed by all participants combined. The event is open and free for all.

Yogathon event will happen in different cities including Auckland (5 centres), Hamilton, Rotorua, Palmerston North, Wellington (3 centres), Nelson and Christchurch.

The enthusiastic response to Yogathon 2013 has come from more than 50 groups and over 1000 individuals. Yogathon is done in association with Deepawali festivals in Waitakere, Auckland, Rotorua and Wellington.

In Rotorua, Yogathon 2013 will be inaugurated by Hon Todd McClay, Associate Minister of Health, during the Rotorua Deepawali Festival.

"We are pleased to know the Minister is participating in the community health event," said Ms Komal Shah, national coordinator of Yogathon 2013.

"We are also pleased to get group registrations from Yoga studios, dance schools, community and social organisations, gyms/ health clubs, and community schools," Ms Shah added.

Yogathon organising committee invites various yoga centres, schools and tertiary institutes, social, cultural, and spiritual and community organisations, regardless of individual faiths and beliefs, to register in this ‘Health for Humanity’ Yogathon.

The purpose of Yogathon is to promote yoga in a scientific perspective of health, to make it a part of school curriculum in future, encourage healthy living and connect yoga schools and practitioners in New Zealand through participation on this annual event.
