Hamilton Designer Takes Top Honours in 2013  NZ Landscape Design Awards

Hamilton landscape designer Richard Boobyer has taken top honours at the 2013 NZ Landscape Design Awards.   His sustainable garden design was judged best in show at the Waikato Home & Garden Show today.

This year the 25 year old Hamiltonian remains in the running for the People’s Choice Award which will be announced on the final day of the Show on Sunday.  His debut entry last year was voted tops by Show visitors.

The New Zealand Landscape Design Awards have been a hallmark of the Waikato Home & Garden Show for more than twenty years. Many successful landscape designers have launched their careers here and have gone on to become award winning designers and win awards at the Ellerslie and Chelsea Flower Shows. This year the designers comprise of seasoned and emerging designers, guaranteed to stimulate creativity and originality.

Boobyer  has a  diploma in landscape design and has been designing and constructing gardens for just two years.   He says he thrives on  providing creative ideas and offers  a young, modern take on landscape design.

“ My courtyard was true to the sustainable theme of the exhibits but offered a practical, modern twist for the busy couple who don't have a lot of time, but want to enjoy their outdoor space with friends” he said.  His design featured a bar leaner, vertical herb garden using pallets and recycled macracarpa slabs, native plants and sustainable timbers.  “ I aim to work in an environmentally conscious way so the theme suited my style. “

Boobyer was commended for his  interpretation, outstanding workmanship, and attention to detail created a courtyard of a very high standard including subtle use of colour and key features pulled the space together.

"I'm really happy to have come away with a gold medal in the NZ Landscape Design Awards. It's the result of a big few months of planning, building and sourcing. Thanks to Ico Traders for providing the outdoor furniture and Joy Plants, Bruntwood Nurseries and Full Bloom for providing the plants. Finally a special thanks to Mangakawa Ecoscapes and Landworx Ltd for their ongoing support. We're looking forward to a great weekend at the home show."
