NZ Secondary Schools Netball Championships - Day One Wrap

NZ Secondary Schools Netball Championships - Day One Wrap

Media Alert
8 October 2013

Netball enthusiasts have been treated to a day of high level competition at the New Zealand Secondary Schools Netball Championships with all 16 teams completing two matches on the opening day in Auckland.

Separated into four pools of four teams at the Auckland Netball Centre, the competition on court demonstrated that netball rivalry between high schools is alive and well with the sizeable crowd treated to some close battles on day one.

Pool A was dominated by defending champions Mount Albert Grammar School with two comprehensive wins over Christchurch Girls’ High School and Auckland Girls’ Grammar School. They are certainly looking like the team to beat with a wealth of talent throughout the court.

In Pool B, St Mary’s College and Palmerston North Girls’ High School won through their early matches and it wasn’t until the final round of the day that the two unbeaten sides came face to face. St Mary’s College showed their class, winning the match 47-18 to remain on track to top the pool. Their first match on day two is against Waimea College who fell just two goals short of victory in a thriller late in the day, beaten by John Paul College 34-32.

Pool C featured the closest contests after the opening day with Wellington East Girls’ College and St Margaret’s College ending their final match of the day with a 32-32 draw after both winning their earlier matches. In other results, Baradene had a mixed day, defeated by Wellington East Girls’ College and beating Southland Girls’ High School 44-33, while Southland Girls’ High School will have to win a tough match tomorrow against Wellington East if they’re to progress.

Tu Toa were picked to be far and away the strongest team in Pool D on the first day of competition but that wasn’t the case after two matches. Tu Toa won their opening encounter against Westlake Girls’ High School 36-19, but were pushed all the way in their second match against Pukekohe High School to eke out a 40-all draw.

Pukekohe High School also won their first match against South Otago High School, keeping themselves in the running to go deep into the championships.
Day Two of the competition starts at 9.00am Wednesday morning with Tu Toa playing South Otago High School and Pukekohe High School against Westlake Girls’ High School. Entry to the Auckland Netball Centre is by gold coin donation.
