The Northern Bass team have been very busy folk, scouring the planet’s top music festivals to bring a truly global collective of bass artists – not just in drum and bass music, but across multiple genres encapsulating hip hop, grime, beats, electronic, break-beat, dub-step and more to New Zealand in December.

“We’re really excited that we’ve been able to put together such a strong and diverse line up for this year’s Northern Bass.  I’m looking forward to seeing two of my personal favourites Talib Kweli and Dillinja tear up the main stage….and am very keen to check out local  favourites The Upbeats Live show with MC Armanni!” says promoter Gareth Popham.

The addition of these established and ground-breaking artists combined with fresh new up and coming talent is going a long way to fulfilling what Northern Bass promises to bring to its audience:  two days of totally mesmerising music and beats, heavyweight bass-lines, samples, loops and effects – what more could a bass culture enthusiast ask for?  How about the fact that it’s all taking place in a gorgeous summer setting with camping, great facilities, good food and all at the best party time of the year!

ARTIST NOTES:
SECOND ANNOUNCEMENT ARTISTS:

TALIB KWELI (USA) - http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=UVtpXvzzXiA
Ever since emerging as a member of Black Star in the late 1990s, the Brooklyn bred rapper's hard-hitting music has been able to educate and entertain simultaneously.  So it is no wonder that at the peak of their fame, both Jay-Z and 50 Cent named Talib Kweli as one of their favourite rappers.

DEAD PREZ (USA) - http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=4jNyr6BJZuI
With hard-hitting beats, politically aware rhymes, deft lyricism and strong song concepts, Dead Prez emerged in 2000 as one of rap’s most politically strident outfits.  Stic man and M-1’s music provided a voice for the voiceless, a sobering look at the global power structure that was crippling billions of people internationally and millions of Americans domestically.

LTJ BUKEM (UK) - http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=he6RBNO50fI
Arguably the prime innovator in the development of jungle from it’s early status as an offshoot of hard-core techno into the respected, stylistic genre it became by the end of the 1990’s.  LTJ Bukem gained fame as an auteur in all fields of the drum n bass movement: as a top-flight break-beat DJ, owner and label head of the Good Looking/Looking Good stable of labels and, of course, for his recordings – inspired by the lush strings and natural ambience of ‘70’s jazz fusion masters like Lonnie Liston Smith and Chick Corea as well as elegiac Chicago house and moody Detroit techno.  Allied with the early ‘90’s rave and hard-core scene, Bukem began working on production near the end of the ‘80’s, though his light, airy sound made little sense to his contemporaries.  Bukem’s style was emulated much more as the jungle scene gained momentum during the mid-‘90’s.

LOADSTAR (UK) - http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=he6RBNO50fI
Made up of Gavin Harris and Nick Hill, formerly and respectively known to the world of drum & bass as Xample and Lomax, this duo has surpassed the highest expectations in recent years by fusing their individual styles and creating a pioneering sound that imbues club dance floors, iPods and huge festival arenas with incredible energy and impeccable musical precision.

SEDGE WARBLER (SA) - http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=4x61CjvIvZE
DJ Caviar and Expensive Drinks are the duo that make up Sedge Warbler.  Pinning these two absolute music machines is a task of impossibility in itself.  Both with illustrious solo careers of their own – Dank and Disco Izrael are allowing their blend of dirty, grinding, glitched-out synth and boom-bap, crunchy drum experiments, intertwined with warped and futuristic fiction raps to be fully realised by the throngs of fans that are standing in lines to see their shows!  Their momentum is a runaway train of intricacy and loud ruckus great music!  Sedge Wu is coming, and very few things can stop them!

ODDISEE (US) - http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=mDOnQCtP10w
Amir Mohamed el Khalifa, better known by his stage name Oddisee, is an MC, rapper and producer hailing from Washington DC.  Oddisee has performed with The Roots, produced for Freeway, Jazzy Jeff, Little Brother, De La Soul & Nikki Jean, MC’d on production from Flying Lotus, Hudson Mohawke and Kev Brown, his proudest moment was the birth of his critically acclaimed group Diamond District with fellow Washingtonians X.O. and yU.

BENNY TONES (NZ) - https://soundcloud.com/bennytones
Benny Tones is a Wellington based producer, DJ and Audio Engineer.   It was a natural progression from DJing that led him to start producing his own beats in 2002 which eventually culminated in his solo album ‘Crysalis’, marking his work as a producer and beat maker.  The album features a diverse host of voal and instrumental collaborators including Electric Wire Hustle’s Mara TK, Taay Ninh and Myele Manznaza, Fat Freddy’s Joe Dukie, Shapeshifter’s Devin Abrams and Sam Trevethick and many more.

CHARLIE B (NZ) - https://soundcloud.com/optimusgryme/rampage
Over the last decade, Waiheke Island’s Charlie B, better known as Optimus Gryme, has quietly carved a reputation out for himself as a skilled DJ, record producer, event promoter and record label operator.  Originally a jungle/drum and bass DJ before making the switch to dub-step under his Optimus Gryme alias, Charlie B is back.  If you’re keen on experiencing a long-form ocean of sound, this could be the one.  Expect a full-spectrum, wide frame overview of both the best of dub-step, jungle and drum and bass from yesterday, today and tomorrow.

TOMMY FLOWERS (NZ) - https://soundcloud.com/tommy_flowers
Tommy Flowers brings the freshest of modern House music and emerging bass genres from the UK underground with excursions into Future Bass, Future Garage, UKF and UKG, Dubstep, Juke and Trap.  Whether playing mid-tempo wonky hip hop and beats in a bar, lush house to warm up a club or filling floors with straight bass bangers at 2am, Tommy mixes it all with the kind of style that comes from 15 years in the game.

EPROM (USA) - https://soundcloud.com/eprom
