"Behind the Vines – Ten Years of R&V"

"Behind the Vines – Ten Years of R&V"

In the lead up to the ten year milestone in 2012, the team at Rhythm and Vines decided it was time to put together a behind the scenes documentary – ‘Behind The Vines’ - showing their journey since the festival’s inception in 2003.

Under the direction of founder Hamish Pinkham, videographers Ben Carter and Dan Maas were commissioned to pull together and shape the Rhythm and Vines story using interviews and the plentiful archive of footage that has been collected over the past decade.

It was 11 years ago, while still studying at Otago University that Hamish Pinkham and Tom Gibson came up with the idea for Rhythm and Vines. Hamish’s flatmate Andrew Witters put them in touch with his father who owned Waiohika Estate in Gisborne. The rest is history.

This fifteen-minute documentary is a chance to book end what has been a memorable journey for all those involved.

“We took the time to look back to see how far we’ve come before we embark on the next 10 year chapter of the festivals growth” says Pinkham.

‘Behind The Vines’ introduces some of the key characters behind the festival, from Al Green, the colourful Production Manager, to The Witters Family who has always been involved in the festival.

The documentary also gets to know the extended R&V family – the Gisborne locals - and highlights the positive impact that the festival has had on the community.

“We didn’t want to air too much dirty laundry” admits Pinkham, “But it was important to show some of the trials and tribulations involved with turning a small party on the edge of the world into a three day world class extravaganza
