Lopdell House Gallery, West Auckland’s regional art gallery, has appointed Andrew Clifford as its new director.

Clifford has worked as a curator at The University of Auckland’s Gus Fisher Gallery since 2007. He has developed exhibitions with important national and international artists, and is a renowned arts writer with contributions to leading journals throughout New Zealand and internationally, including Art New Zealand, Art & Australia and Hong Kong-based Art Asia Pacific.

He takes up the Directorship on 4 November and will lead the gallery team as it plans to move back to redeveloped premises in Titirangi next August.

“Working with the distinctive communities and environment of West Auckland offers unique opportunities”, says Clifford. “It’s an inspiring time to join Lopdell House Gallery and the redeveloped facilities will allow the organisation to really spread its wings.”

Lopdell House is currently undergoing earthquake strengthening and upgrades for its historic 1930 building.

“With the development of the new gallery in Titirangi, it is an exciting opportunity to build on the excellent work of the Lopdell House Society and its representatives who have over the years worked hard to build the reputation of the gallery as a provider of quality cultural experience and education.

“The current committee looks forward to working with Andrew, who has a wonderful opportunity to take the gallery to the next phase of its life”, says Lopdell House Society Chairperson, Marcus Williams.

Clifford replaces Lesley Smith who has been with the gallery since 2003, including 8 years as Director. “Lesley leaves the organisation in great shape and has been instrumental in lobbying and fundraising for the improved facilities and extensions”, says Williams.

During the redevelopment Lopdell House Gallery is operating an exhibition programme and gallery shop from New Lynn town centre, as well as projects in the wider community.
