Whanganui UCOL up the river with a paddle

Whanganui UCOL Certificate in Sports Performance (CESP) students have been getting pretty close to their river recently.

The students have been lucky enough to spend time with Waka Ama, a group of water enthusiasts who build and paddle Waka on the Whanganui River.

UCOL Lecturer Jon Bailey says the activity is just one of the many sports the students get to experience during their programme.

“We have a close relationship with the Union Boat Club so our students have also tried rowing and kayaking,” says Jon.

The activity with Waka Ama is a dual initiative. Jon says, “It demonstrates important learning in terms of team building and linking to how the body is working and providing energy during exercise, while the Waka Ama club may gain some extra members.”

The students have also tried their hands at squash and tennis. There is a rumour that lawn bowls is next on the list.

The students have put local school children and sports teams through their paces with fitness assessments. “It gives them the opportunity to use their sports performance skills in a practical environment,” says Jon.

Anyone keen to learn more about the sports performance certificate or Waka Ama, should visit Whanganui UCOL’s Open Day on Saturday 9 November from 10.00am - 2.00pm.
