Showjumping - All Power In Grand Prix In Christchurch

Showjumping Canterbury’s 1* Star Show

Labour Weekend Showjumping Carnival

Sunday 27 & Monday 28 November

ALL POWER IN GRAND PRIX AT CHRISTCHURCH

It’s been a long time coming, but Georgina Power finally has a Grand Prix victory to her name.

So often the bridesmaid, the 23-year-old from Little River steered the nine-year-old former Western horse Waldorf to victory in the One Star Grand Prix at Showjumping Canterbury’s Labour Weekend Carnival today.

Attracting just 11 starters, course designer Philippa Howell’s track jumped well with four clears in the first round to Olivia Robertson on Ngahiwi Cisco, Tegan Fitzsimon on Dual Diamond, Power and Waldorf, and Claudia Hay on Euro Sport Centavos, while Susie Hayward and Andretti jumped clear but picked up one agonising time fault.

Hayward and Andretti put in another clear performance in the second round to put the pressure on the final four. Two rails down put Fitzsimon out of the running. Robertson and Cisco were out next, finishing clear in a time of 66.73, with Hay and Euro Sport Centavos also clear but slower in 69.41. Last to go, it was up to Power who left everything up and finished two seconds faster to steal victory.

“It’s been a long-time coming. I have always just missed out,” said Power, who had her first Grand Prix start when she was just 16 years old. “It was his turn. He just felt really good today. I am absolutely thrilled. It’s so rewarding when you have taken them all the way through and done it all yourself.”

Broadfields teen Lucy Turner came through to win the strong Country TV Pony Grand Prix with an eye-catching performance aboard Tallyho Mystic, a week out from taking on the best 1* eventers in the country at the RD1 National Three Day Event Championships back here at the National Equestrian Centre at McLeans Island near Christchurch.

Thirteen started the class with just four combinations going clear in the first round. In the second round the pressure was on, but after Molly Buist-Brown (Templeton) and Miss Mae West had a rail and Sarah Parkes (Blenheim) on Tallyho Maestro was eliminated it left just two fighting it out for overall honours. Lucinda Askin (Ashburton) and Totem were next out going clear, meaning Turner had to leave everything up.

Turner duly responded, with Tallyho Mystic foot-perfect throughout to secure the biggest win of her short career.

Invercargill Nicole White’s dream run continued in the Telford Young Rider, securing her fourth win in as many starts with the only clear round, while the KiwiSpan Junior went to Geogria Urquhart (Fairlie) on Quickstep NZPH and the Caledonian Amateur Rider to Jenna Walls (West Melton) Baltamour with a super jump-off performance.
