Twelve Art Workshops to Nourish the Creative Spirit

A varied choice of arts workshops on this Summer School 2014 menu

Corban Estate Arts Centre brings together leading arts practitioners to offer their talents in a variety of stimulating workshops at its annual Summer School, from the 13th to the 17th of January 2014.

This summer, twelve inspiring and experienced artists will share their skills in a selection of diverse arts workshops, led by notable arts practitioners. Renowned sculptor Martin Selman, award-winning theatre company Red Leap and the Dream in Shadows Film Company’s crew will come on board for the first time to offer three brand new workshops at the Summer School 2014.

Sculptor Martin Selman is well known for his exquisite and refined Carrara marble sculptures. His commitment to the medium has involved extensive work, research and travel in New Zealand, Italy, England and Switzerland. Selman’s workshop will introduce participants to stone carving techniques, the basic principles of design and how to transpose their concepts into soft Oamaru stone.

Red Leap is New Zealand’s leading movement and image based Theatre Company, renowned for fantastical theatrical work that enchants audiences. Participants of their workshop will learn expertise in creating puppets and imagery to bring stories to life and discover powerful ways of storytelling, involving performers to complete the picture.

In an end to end filmmaking workshop, a passionate group of film industry professionals come together to share their knowledge. This complete workshop will set up participants to tackle any film project, and will provide them with a simulated real-life film production experience that involves writing, acting, directing, producing, editing and screening. Dreams in Shadows is an emerging film company with multiple production projects that include TV commercials, music videos, documentaries and short films.

Other workshops offered at the 2014 Summer School include printmaking, oil painting, life drawing and painting, graffiti art, sculpting jewelry, darjit sculptures, singing, up-cycled fabric art and children’s book illustration.

In addition to spending time in the course of their choice, participants may choose to attend an evening where each tutor/artist presents an aspect of their arts practice. These widely varied presentations are always a much anticipated element of the Summer School, stimulating ideas for participants. Another optional element of the Summer School is a private visit to the house where Colin McCahon and his family lived, hosted by the McCahon House Trust. Participants will also meet McCahon House Artist in Residence, Tiffany Singh.

The Summer School provides participants with a week of arts experiences where they can expand their imagination, master new skills and push the boundaries of their talent. The spacious environment of the Corban Estate, gives participants the opportunity to meet others with similar interests and enthusiasm for creating art and often develop new friendships.

Set in the character filled industrial winery buildings of the Corban Estate Arts Centre, with its parklands and handy on site café, the arts centre is a twenty minute drive from central Auckland and there is abundant parking on the Estate. It is also only a ten minute walk to the Henderson railway station and town centre.

In addition to the classes on offer, the Summer School programme also includes an orientation evening, artist presentations by tutors, an off-site visit and an open door afternoon.

OPTIONAL ACTIVITIES

Sunday 12 January, 6 –7pm
Orientation: All Summer School participants are encouraged to this event to meet their tutors and each other, plan for the workshop ahead and enjoy some wine and nibbles.

Tuesday 14 January, 5pm – 6.30pm
Tutor Showcase: Each tutor will give a brief fast-paced, informal presentation about an aspect of their working practice over wine and nibbles. This is always an enjoyable fun evening and not to be missed.

Wednesday 15 January, 4.30pm – 6pm
Off Site Visit: A private visit to the house where Colin McCahon and his family lived from 1953 to 1960, hosted by the McCahon House Trust. Participants will also meet McCahon House Artist in Residence, Tiffany Singh, in the adjacent studio.

Thursday 16 January, 2pm – 4.30pm
Visitors Open Afternoon: An opportunity for friends and family to visit the Summer School workshops at the Arts Centre to witness what is happening and being achieved. Some artist studios based on site will be open for our visitors.

Coffee Studio: Our fabulous Coffee Studio will offer delicious organic coffee, fresh lunches, snacks and beverages throughout the week.

REMBRANDTS OF HISTORY | ALL LEVELS | 5 DAYS

Join artist Alexis Neal on an exciting journey into the endless possibilities of printmaking. This diverse workshop will give you a unique overview of a variety of printmaking processes and techniques, including the introduction of soft ground etching using a 6/1 nitric acid water mix to etch our zinc plates. Print examples will be shown and technical skills thoroughly demonstrated and discussed as you create impressions and images through multiple explorations.

LIFE DRAWING AND PAINTING | ALL LEVELS | 5 DAYS

In this richly informed painting and drawing workshop you will create bold expressive painterly works which are well considered, rich in form, colour and gesture. Working from both undraped and draped life models, experience an inspired series of days where energetic yet thoughtfully constructed drawing and composition will gradually make way to some challenging experiences in larger format life painting. This is an ideal opportunity for trained and untrained artists to re-boot lapsed talents and explore new areas.

END TO END FILM MAKING | ALL LEVELS | 5 DAYS

Launch yourself into the heated fray of film with a passionate group of writers, directors, producers and editors. With professional filmmakers teaching and supporting you, learn the art and business of filmmaking as you develop a story, create a budget, pitch it to studios, hash out storyboards, then cast and shoot a film with your team. In the edit room you will work with professional editors to prepare for the screening which completes the end to end process of film making and sets you up as a film maker.

OIL PAINTING IN THE 21ST CENTURY | ALL LEVELS | 4 DAYS

Still unrivalled for brilliance and glow, oil painting can also be simple, quick, and fume-free. By combining straightforward, non-toxic painting processes with plenty of historical background, students will learn the importance of priming, composition, colour harmony and tonality, using both alla prima and layered painting techniques. This class will encourage the development of your own artistic direction, so please bring photographs, drawings and any relevant visual material. Images will also be supplied by the tutor.

SCULPTING PURE SILVER JEWELLERY | ALL LEVELS | 5 DAYS

Explore the magic process of sculpting your own jewellery with clay-like pure silver. You will learn about design aspects and acquire skills to shape, decorate, refine and finish your individual silver jewellery piece. You will go home with at least 4 jewellery items and new skills so you can continue to create original jewellery at home! Everyone welcome, this workshop is also suitable for beginners with no experience.

From back alleys to the world’s great modern art galleries, graffiti has come of age without losing any of its high octane creativity, spontaneity and relevance. This workshop focuses on the different styles, techniques and mediums of modern street and graffiti art. With an emphasis on practical application, the course will cover freehand spray painting, sketching, stencil making, graffiti typography, mural painting and more. The course content will vary depending on students’ specific areas of interest, focusing on the needs of both individuals and the wider group.

SINGING WITH FREEDOM | ALL LEVELS | 3 DAYS

Immerse yourself in song and take a new journey into singing with freedom. Explore songs from modern and ancient traditions, as well as gain an understanding of the context in which they are originally performed. Jyoshna will assist you in developing a greater awareness of your natural voice and improve aspects of your physical voice. This workshop could also serve as the beginnings of a choir, as you develop wonderful new relationships with others who love to sing.

UPCYCLE YOUR WORLD | ALL LEVELS | 5 DAYS

Create your own ‘one of a kind’ garments, bags, jewellery and more from found and saved materials. Transform treasured family clothing into blankets or cushions, old knitwear into funky children's outfits, jewellery from all the scraps and even bags from recycled packaging. Enthusiasm, a sense of fun and a helping hand is all you need to make something from nothing. Please bring a sewing machine and your collection of saved fabrics and embellishments. A sewing machine is available for shared use or if you prefer you could hand sew smaller items.

DARJIT SCULPTURES | ALL LEVELS | 5 DAYS

Join award winning sculptor Kobi Beck and discover Darjit – an exciting versatile concrete medium made from recycled paper and clay. Darjit workshops are for anyone, from absolute beginners to people working in an arts field. Discover the diversity of this fun medium as you explore form and structure using wire armatures, and play with surface texture, colour, mosaics, to make just about anything you choose. You will make a piece to take home and be set up with all the ‘know how’ to work on your own future projects.

OAMARU STONE CARVING| ALL LEVELS | 5 DAYS

In this exciting five day course you will learn the basic principles of design and how to transpose your concept into stone. By the end of the workshop you will have created one or two of your own sculptures in Oamaru limestone. Martin Selman is a full time sculptor and has been facilitating workshops for 15 years. All tools, safety glasses and masks are provided. The fee includes one piece of limestone; extra stone is available to purchase during the week.

HOW TO BE A CHILDREN’S BOOK ILLUSTRATOR| ALL LEVELS | 5 DAYS
Nina Rycroft and Sandra Morris
Mon 13 – Fri 17 Jan, 10am – 4.30pm
Fee $395 (Includes some materials)
Award winning illustrator/author team Sandra Morris and Nina Rycroft will help you develop your craft as an Illustrator. Learn the skills required to pitch your picture book idea to a publisher, design and create a picture book character, make a 3D model and discover how to breathe life into your drawings. Develop a storyboard, make a mock-up picture book of your story and explore illustration techniques to help you produce an original picture book artwork.

BRINGING STORIES TO LIFE | ALL LEVELS | 5 DAYS
Jessika Verryt and Ella Becroft from Red Leap Theatre
Mon 13 – Fri 17 Jan, 10am – 4.30pm
Fee: $410 (Includes all materials)
Award-winning Red Leap Theatre is New Zealand’s leading image and movement based theatre company. In this workshop we will create puppets and imagery to bring stories to life. Working with storytelling, we will investigate how to create images that soar when words fail, and discover the most powerful ways of animating them with the performer to complete the picture. No experience in acting or image making is required. At the end of this five day course we will present a small showing of the work made.
