ALICE AND CALEB PEARSON WIN ‘THE BLOCK NZ’ AND $261,000

PETE AND ANDY TAKE HOME THE PEOPLE’S CHOICE AWARD

Husband and wife team Alice and Caleb have been crowned the 2013 winners of The Block NZ, taking home an amazing $261,000 after a dramatic auction held in central Auckland tonight – and televised LIVE on TV3.

Ten weeks of renovation, relationship drama, and top ratings culminated in a two-hour finale where the four properties located on the corner of Lake and Eversleigh Roads in Belmont (on Auckland’s North Shore) were auctioned by Bayleys Real Estate, with all four of the houses selling.

Alice and Caleb said: “It feels amazing. We just found out the result and it’s crazy. After the first two auctions we really did feel that all the houses were all on an equal level so we really weren't expecting much.

“It's amazing what you can achieve when you put your mind to it. I would say to anyone, give it a go!”

Brothers Pete and Andy were named the winners of the inaugural People’s Choice Award, decided by public vote, and take home the All-New Mazda 6 they drove during filming of the hit series.

Pete said: "Always wondered how many sheep you could fit in the back of this Mazda 6, now we are gonna find out!"

Andy said: "Fully stoked, wish we went a bit easier on the beast, looking forward to thrashing it some more"

The competing teams – Alisa and Koan, Pete and Andy, Alice and Caleb, and Loz and Tom – were on the edge of their seats throughout the auction as each of the houses went under the hammer.

At the end of the night, the house renovated by Alice and Caleb sold for $1,126,000, making them the team with the highest profit. Under the rules of the competition, the winners keep the $181,000 profit, and take home an additional $80,000 cash prize.

MediaWorks Director of Programming Mark Caulton says the finale was a spectacular end to a blockbuster second series.

“I’m really proud that The Block NZ is again TV3’s #1 series and New Zealand’s favourite show.

“Congratulations to Alice and Caleb, who are deserving winners, Pete and Andy who kept the audience entertained throughout the series, as well as Loz and Tom and Alisa and Koan, and everyone at TV3 and Eyeworks who have contributed to an outstanding second series. Roll on series three!”

The Block NZ is TV3’s biggest show of 2013, and currently the #1 show on television in the all-important 25-54 demographic. The penultimate episode, a two-hour special that screened on Tuesday 29 October was watched by an average audience of 498,200 Kiwis (5+ rating) and had a phenomenal 39.5% share of the key 25-54 audience.

More than 70% of the New Zealand population has tuned into the series to date; the 5+ cume reach ahead of tonight’s Final was 2,948,200 New Zealanders (71.5%), compared with 2,697,600 (65.9%) at the same stage of the 2012 competition.
