Sevens tickets now on sale

Tickets for the Bayleys National Provincial Sevens Tournament, which will be held in Rotorua on 11 and 12 January 2014, go on sale via Ticketmaster this morning. Twenty six teams (including 10 women’s teams and 16 men’s teams) will take part in this highly competitive, fast-paced competition at Rotorua International Stadium.

This is the first time the tournament has been held in Rotorua and event organiser Mike Rogers, CEO of the Bay of Plenty Rugby Union (BOPRU), says ticket prices have been set at an affordable level, so as many people as possible can watch the action. Prices range from $15 for an adult’s day pass, $5 for a child and $35 for a family (two adults and three children).

“We are thrilled to be able to host this event for the next two years,” says Mike. “Not only is the tournament great for the sport, but it’s a tourism boon for local businesses. We believe Rotorua’s central location and fantastic facilities will attract plenty of Sevens fans from around the country.

“We would particularly like to acknowledge funding support from New Zealand Community Trust (NZCT) who contributed $210,000 towards the costs of the tournament,” he says. “NZCT is an amazing contributor to communities throughout New Zealand, and without their support events such as this one would not be possible.

“This annual event continues to grow each year and has taken on even more importance now that Sevens have been included in the Olympics. This will be one of the biggest Sevens tournaments since the competition began back in 1975.

“We’re keen to get the local community involved, so we’re looking to recruit volunteers to help deliver the tournament and assist teams through team liaison officer roles.”

NZCT Regional Advisory Committee member and Rotorua District councillor Trevor Maxwell says NZCT was pleased to help fund this event as it fits well with the trust’s mission of supporting amateur sport.

“Sport offers so many benefits to individuals and families, and it can improve the wellbeing of a community,” says Mr Maxwell. “This tournament is a golden opportunity for locals to see the best Sevens players in the country battle it out for the national title.

“NZCT is pleased to be working in partnership with BOPRU bringing this fantastic event to Rotorua,” he says.

Tickets for the Bayleys National Provincial Sevens Tournament will be available from Monday 18 November at all Ticketmaster outlets (including Rotorua Convention Centre) and online at ticketmaster.co.nz.

Last year alone NZCT distributed $37.5m in grants to sports, community and cultural events and clubs throughout the country. NZCT is one of the largest funders of amateur sport in New Zealand, and we’re proud of it. We can only achieve this thanks to the hard work of our local venue operators who operate safe, controlled gaming environments, where responsible and legitimate gambling takes place.
