Hay Seals Horse Grand Prix

Mosgiel’s Claudia Hay pulled out one of the standout performances of the day to win an eventful Sellars Building Horse Grand Prix at the ESNZ 3* South Island Jumping Championships in Waimate today.

Aboard her 10-year-old imported Escudo I stallion Euro Sport Centavos, Hay produced one of only three clear rounds in the first round over the imposing Gerrit Beker-designed course, alongside in-form combinations Tegan Fitzsimon (Rolleston) on Dual Diamond and Kate Cavanagh (West Melton) on Vermont.

The 11-strong field was reduced to just seven in the second round with four combinations eliminated. Last to go, Hay was again foot perfect notching up a deserved win. Four faults to both Fitzsimon and Cavanagh left them holding the minor placings, with Hay fourth on her second ride, Euro Sport Heartbreaker on a two round total of 6 with just a stop and two time faults from the first round.

Hay was thrilled with the stallion, who continues to get better and better with every outing.

As promised the Table Downs Sport Horses & Numnahs NZ Country TV Pony Grand Prix proved a tight battle, with Steffi Whittaker and Moonlight Glow coming up trumps.

Whittaker and arch rival Lucinda Askin were the only two to go clear in the first round. Whittaker had one down in the second, leaving Askin forced to chase for a fast time, but she came unstuck collecting 12 faults. Whittaker took the honours ahead of Lucy Turner on Tallyho Mystic, second on 8 faults from the first round.
