Top of the charts for charity

Top of the charts for charity

Students from Thorrington Primary School in Christchurch are aiming to raise $10,000 for KidsCan, the charity supporting disadvantaged New Zealand children, by securing the number one spot on the New Zealand singles chart this Christmas.

The launch of the single today on iTunes by the Thorrington School of Rock follows this week's release of the Child Poverty Report which reinforces that one in four Kiwi children are living in poverty and 10 percent are in severe poverty.

The students wanted to do something to help young people in need after seeing the support the Canterbury region received from people throughout the country after the 2010 and 2011 earthquakes.

Their song, Some People, was written by Thorrington School teacher Mark Brooke and recorded at Riverside Sound Studio in Christchurch. A video for the song was made by students from the New Zealand Broadcasting School.

Mr Brooke says the support of KidsCan’s principal partner, Meridian Energy, will enable all funds raised from sales of the single to go directly to KidsCan.

"It has been fantastic to have Meridian's support on this project. We would love to raise as much as we can for KidsCan and getting the number one spot on the singles chart this Christmas would help us do that.”
