Kiwis Over the Moon About ‘Gravity’ In Awards
MEDIA RELEASE – EMBARGOED UNTIL 6am Thursday January 16
Kiwis Over the Moon About ‘Gravity’ In People’s Choice Movie Awards
After a month of voting in which thousands of Kiwis took part, the people have spoken, naming orbital thriller GRAVITY the Best Movie of 2013. A huge success at the NZ Box Office last year, GRAVITY was also chosen as New Zealand’s Thriller of the Year.
Its star Sandra Bullock didn’t quite have the votes to overcome the sheer popularity of Jennifer Lawrence, however, who was voted Best Actress for her performance inSILVER LININGS PLAYBOOK and Hero of the Year for THE HUNGER GAMES: CATCHING FIRE. The love for Lawrence didn’t stop there – as one half of the duo at the heart of SILVER LININGS PLAYBOOK (alongside Bradley Cooper) she helped the pair score Best Couple and may have also had something to do with THE HUNGER GAMES: CATCHING FIRE taking out the Best Sci-Fi category.
A trio of films with special relevance to Kiwis also won awards. Andrew Adamson’s MR. PIP won Best NZ Movie; BEYOND THE EDGE, recreating Sir Edmund Hillary’s conquest of Mt Everest, was voted Best Documentary; and Sir Peter Jackson’s box office behemoth THE HOBBIT: THE DESOLATION OF SMAUG was judged Best Fantasy.
Elsewhere amongst the twenty publicly voted categories New Zealanders showed their love for a diverse range of films including ANCHORMAN 2: THE LEGEND CONTINUES, DJANGO UNCHAINED, ONLY GOD FORGIVES, THE CONJURING,DESPICABLE ME 2, THE GREAT GATSBY, CAPTAIN PHILLIPS and LIFE OF PI.
That’s not
to overlook IRON MAN 3, which IGLOO General Manager David
Joyce had previously stated was his pick of the Best
Action category. “It’s great to see that so many people
love movies and got involved in voting for their
favourites!” David said upon seeing the results. “I’m
particularly happy to see that IRON MAN 3 took out theBest
Action category. For all of you that voted and whose movie
didn’t make the cut don’t take it to heart, you can
console yourself by watching it (and heaps more) on IGLOO
for $1 for the remainder of January.”
Flicks.co.nz Editor Steve
Newall echoed David’s sentiments: “Thanks to all the
people who voted and shared their strongly-held opinions
about their favourite films. I’m pleased to see several of
my own opinions confirmed, not least of which is the
long-awaited acknowledgement of Leonardo
DiCaprio’s Biggest Bastard status. With an awesome year
of films to look forward to during 2014 I’m already
curious to see how next year’s winners will shape
up.”
The winner of the Full HD TV graciously provided by Sony as a prize for voters will be drawn and contacted early next week, as well as the winner of the huge Madman documentary pack and consolation prizes of Hoyts double passes.
The full list of winners follows, and will be online from Thursday January 16th with more information about each of the films at www.flicks.co.nz/awards.
