Banks Shoes Shapeshifter exhibition opens

HUTT CITY COUNCIL NEWS RELEASE

21 FEBRUARY 2014

Banks Shoes Shapeshifter exhibition opens

The sixth Banks Shoes Shapeshifter, opens at the Hutt City Civic Gardens during The New Zealand Festival which runs until 16 March 2014.

Organised by the Rotary Club of Hutt City, the sculpture exhibition shows imaginative work from artists across New Zealand selected by The Dowse Art Museum’s director, Courtney Johnston.

Guy Ngan, Tanya Ashken and Mia Hamilton are amongst 58 artists showing, drawn from a large number of entries from across New Zealand.

Well-known New Zealand sculptor Guy Ngan OBE is showing at Shapeshifter for the first time, with two works, Eliza and Polynesian Pagoda.

His work Polynesian Pagoda is inspired by Pacific peoples across the world. “These people produce beautiful artwork and music; my appreciation of that has inspired me to present this pagoda,” says Mr Ngan.

Lucy Bucknall’s award-winning Big Man is a two metre tall bronze bear wearing a hoody. Weighing in at over 60 kilograms it will be one of the more challenging installs of the show, but well worth the effort.

This year Shapeshifter has extended opening hours (11am-7pm each day) to make the most of our warm summer evenings. People are encouraged to take the opportunity for after work viewings or to pack a picnic and join friends for a special and enjoyable garden dinner amongst the art.

While there is an admission charge, Shapeshifter is a fundraising exhibition with all money going to local charities Te Omanga Hospice, the Gillies McIndoe Research Institute, The Dowse Art Museum and youth programmes in the Hutt Valley.

All work is for sale – both in the outdoor exhibition and inside in the daily display.
