Good Day For Seeds At X-TRM Badminton Champs

The top seeds came through largely unscathed on day one of the X-TRM 2014 New Zealand National Badminton Championships at the Eastlink Badminton Stadium in Hamilton today.

In the Men’s Singles top seed Luke Charlesworth (Waitakere) led the way with a comfortable second round win after enjoying a first up bye, but equally impressive was second seed Dylan Soedjasa (North Harbour) who was similarly dominant after also having a bye through to the second round.

Maika Phillips (North Harbour) was the main casualty, the 3/4 seed bowed out, losing in straight games to youngster Benjamin Hillier (Auckland) in the second round.

In the Women’s Singles the top three seeds all moved comfortably into the second round, including defending champion and third seed Anona Pak (North Harbour) and top seed Vicki Copeland (North Harbour). These two fought out the 2013 final and are on track for a repeat performance on Monday if they maintain their form, a scenario helped by the injury enforced absence of 2nd seed Kelly Stern (Hawkes Bay).

It was more of the same in the Mixed Doubles with the top pairings all safely negotiating their way through to the quarter finals.

Play continues tomorrow (Sunday) with quarter-finals in all events from 10am and semi-finals from 5pm with finals and 3rd/4th play offs on Queens Birthday Monday from 10am. Entry is free for all spectators.
