The Surgeon takes gold, good signs ahead

20 athletes from across the North Island descended on Hamilton looking for crucial ranking points to help their chances ahead of the National Championships later this year.

Following a week-long training camp in Sydney, Greig ‘the surgeon’ Jackson made the trip north in search of some match practice ahead of the Beijing World Championships in September.

After topping his group in pool play, New Zealand number one Jackson was too strong for the rest of the competition en route to claiming the gold medal in the BC3 grade, beating long-time rival Anthea Henry-Hurst from Auckland 11-1 in the one-sided final.

“I haven’t played this well since 2008” said Jackson.

“Greig is on the road to Rio and we are very pleased with his progress so far as he looks to peak in September against the best in the world” said Boccia New Zealand Director Luke Morriss.

Boccia is a sport designed for individuals with physical impairments and is best described as an indoor version of petanque with soft leather balls. The aim of the game is to get as many of your coloured balls as close as possible to the jack while preventing the opposition from doing the same.

To get involved with the sport or to find out more information contact Luke Morriss on 0800 503 603 ext. 3 or visit www.boccia.org.nz
