Maori Language Week highlights transport links with Maori

Maori language week kicks off today and Auckland Transport will be emphasising language links in the Auckland area.

There will be kapa haka (song and dance) performances in some key transport interchanges and posters on trains, buses and ferries displaying phonetic pronunciation guides in Maori to commuters for common destinations.

The key message of the posters is emphasise the value of correct Maori pronunciation and to familiarise travellers with tradition Maori names for some Auckland locations.

The week began at Britomart Station with a kapa haka performance in front of the gates, free pork and puha soup for commuters and information handed out by local kura (school) children.

Throughout the week there will be morning performances for travellers at Panmure Interchange, Smales Farm busway station, the New Lynn Interchange, and Manukau train station.

Auckland Transport was the winner of Te Wiki o te reo Māori (Māori Language week) award by the Māori Language Commission, Te Taura Whiri in 2012 and 2013 and we are proud to continue to support the week again this year.

Tipa Compain, the Māori Policy and Engagement Manager at Auckland Transport says Public Transport physically intersects Māori culture and history of Auckland at many points and Māori Language Week is an opportunity to emphasise how deeply Te Reo Māori is integrated into the transport network.

“Our starting or destination points have a rich Māori history and traditional names, and this week is about celebrating that history”, he says.
