Kiwi’s Pacific Ocean reaches Hawaii

Kiwi’s Pacific Ocean will reach Hawaii around 1pm today [July 20]

Tara Remington’s row across the Pacific Ocean is down to the last 90 minutes. The pair have just past Koko Head on the southeastern side of the Island of Oahu in Hawaii.

Tara, 44, a professional teaching fellow at the University of Auckland's Faculty of Education, is rowing across the Pacific Ocean from Long Beach, Los Angeles to Waikiki in Hawaii with American Paralympian Angela Madsen, 54. The pair left Los Angeles on 20 May in their 6m mono-hull rowboat the Spirit of Orlando.

They are estimated to reach Waikiki at around 1pm Sunday 20 July New Zealand time.

Angela and Tara stepped up their pace from an incredible 70 miles a day to almost
80 miles per 24 hours after seeing the lights of Maui on July 17, and their first sight of land in almost two-months on the morning of July 18.

They are rationing their dwindling food supplies and are anxious to see family and
Friends when they arrive at the Waikiki Yacht Club.

Lew also has footage of their departure from Los Angeles.

When they complete the journey they will break two records, they will be the first female pair in history to row from California to Hawaii, while Angela, who is paralyzed from the waist down, will be the first paraplegic to row from Los Angeles to Hawaii.

Tara’s 4000 Km odyssey is to raise money for New Zealand girl Charlotte Cleverley-Bisman. Charlotte lost her arms and legs to meningitis as a baby in 2004. Now a ten-year-old, she needs on-going assistance with prosthetic limbs as she grows. Tara's row will also help raise enough money for Charlotte to attend Camp No Limits, a special camp for amputees and their families held in the United States each year. Angela, a former US marine, is also using the row to raise money for wounded American war veterans. The United States Navy and the National Parks Service is allowing the pair to row the Spirit of Orlando into Pearl Harbour on Tuesday July 22nd Hawaiian time so Angela can pay her respects to fallen comrades.

Tara, a Waiuku resident, first got involved with Charlotte’s charity through the Meningitis Trust in the 2007 Atlantic Rowing Race, and now her daughter Jade is Charlotte’s pen-pal.

Gordon Campbell: Classics - Tales From Moominvalley
Can’t speak for the reading end of it but the Moomins ( or maybe the story about Margaret Wise Brown) were the most enjoyable subject to think about and write about during these whole first 50 issues of Werewolf. For that reason – and because the Moomins always reward re-reading – I’ve decided to reprint it. The only added element is a link to an interesting hour long documentary about Tove Jansson. More>>
