Exciting Events Linked To Travel in Style

Music, fashion fun, floor talks and hands-on activities are part of the exciting line-up of events MTG Hawke’s Bay is offering in association with the Travel in Style exhibition, which opens to the public tomorrow (27 September).

The exhibition is drawn from a collection of garments belonging to Whetu Tirikatene-Sullivan (1932-2011), New Zealand’s longest serving female MP and political trailblazer, gifted to the Hawke’s Bay Museums Trust by her family. It is the first time her garments, many of which incorporate striking Maori motifs, have been on display.

The Hamuera Showband, part of the Ratana movement, will perform from 10am to 11am tomorrow, just outside MTG’s main foyer. Whetu was raised at Ratana Pa, near Whanganui, and named by the movement’s leader.

Following the performance some members of Whetu’s whanau will accompany curator Lizzie Wratislav on a floor talk and guided tour, starting at 11am, through the exhibition.

Entry to the floor talk is included with the MTG’s entry charge, or free for holders of Travel in Style programme tickets which are given to customers at entry.

Visitors to MTG tomorrow will from 10am also have a chance to create their own tapestry panels to be incorporated into a special korowai, or cloak, inspired by Whetu’s fashion. Materials and basic instructions will be provided free of charge in the MTG foyer. This activity will be repeated on Sunday 2 November.
