Hip Hop-eration chosen for world's leading documentary fest

1 October 2014

New Zealand Documentary Feature Hip Hop-eration In Competition at the World's Leading International Documentary Festival

Director Bryn Evan's documentary feature debut, Hip Hop-eration, will have its international premiere In Competition in the First Appearance section of the 2014 International Documentary Festival Amsterdam (IDFA). Held from November 19 - 30th, IDFA is the largest and most important documentary film festival and market in the world.

Produced by Paula Jones and exec produced by Unitec's head of department for Performing and Screen Arts, Alex Lee, Hip Hop-eration was made with funding from the New Zealand Film Commission (NZFC). The film follows a troupe of courageous, yet cheeky, senior citizens from Waiheke Island on an extraordinary quest to perform at the World Hip Hop Championships in Las Vegas. Hip Hop-eration is a poetic feel-good film that proves age has no limits and that hip-hop can set you free. Along the way it provides insight into the lives of some colourful characters that have helped shape New Zealand as we know it.

The film has just been released by Rialto Distribution across NZ to rave reviews:

Regardless of your age or musical inclinations, this unashamedly feel-good local documentary will have you tapping your toes and whooping for joy. 5 out of 5 stars.

Sarah Watts, Sunday Star Times

The producers say, "From the outset we knew this film would be successful internationally. It had all the elements of a great story. This is a film which all Kiwis can celebrate and be proud of."

Film Commission CEO, Dave Gibson adds, "Hip Hop-eration is an entertaining and inspirational film that deftly captures the energy and spirit of the Hip Operation dance troupe. We are thrilled the film has been invited to screen at IDFA in November, and look forward to New Zealanders seeing the film when it releases in NZ later this month. They will love this slice of Kiwi life Bryn, Paula and Alex have brought to the big screen."

Hip Hop-eration had its world premiere on 22nd September at Event Cinemas Newmarket as a fundraiser for the children's charity organisation, Variety International.

"In a year of outstanding New Zealand film production, this sets a new benchmark for sheer emotion" says Joe Moodabe, Variety New Zealand President, ONZM and former Chief Executive of Hoyts Cinemas and Village SKYCITY Cinemas.
