AA unveils massive boost for new learner drivers

A massive boost for learner drivers has been unveiled by the NZ Automobile Association today.

With an investment of more than $2 million, AA Ignition offers new learner drivers three free driving lessons, delivering the best possible kick-start towards staying safe behind the wheel.

AA Driving School General Manager, Development Nigel Clark says lessons from professional instructors are essential to improving driving standards in New Zealand.

“For many young people learning to drive is a time that is filled with challenges and uncertainty. Professional driving instructors ensure new drivers have the best start on the road to getting a full driver licence,” Mr Clark says.

About half of New Zealand’s newest motorists fail their restricted licence driving test which suggests they are not adequately prepared for driving solo.

“We’ve made it our goal to help improve road safety outcomes by ensuring new drivers are better prepared.

“Since the launch of the Free Driving Lesson programme in July last year, we’ve delivered more than 5000 free lessons to learner drivers. It is an invaluable step towards becoming the safest and most confident drivers on New Zealand roads.”

Mr Clark says the initial free lesson also provides parents who choose to ride along a better understanding of how best to provide supervised driving practice for their children.

“Learner drivers need the right combination of professional driving lessons with plenty of supervised practice between them. This ensures they develop the necessary skills and knowledge to get through every stage of the driver licence process and become safe, confident and responsible drivers.”

The AA Driving School has been preparing for today’s launch of AA Ignition with the recruitment of 50 more driving instructors throughout the country.

“AA Ignition provides a benefit of about $200 to everyone who engages fully and completes the programme.”

“We’ve launched innovative content on our website, called Learn to drive the AA way. It provides information and guidance to new drivers. Our AA Ignition programme means the right steps are taken at the start of the learning to drive journey.”

AA Ignition is an AA Member benefit and to be eligible participants need to have held their learner licence for two months or less and be able to link it to Membership with their own or through a parent, son, daughter, aunt, uncle or grandparent.

“Improving roads and safer cars are crucial, but it’s equally important to have better drivers behind the wheel,” Mr Clark says.
