Caroline Wozniacki, confirmed for 2015 ASB Classic

Former world number one and US Open runner-up, Caroline Wozniacki, confirmed for 2015 ASB Classic

In one of the biggest coups for the tournament to date, ASB Classic organisers are thrilled to announce that world number nine, Caroline Wozniacki will be joining the 2015 field.

The confirmation of the golden girl of women’s tennis caps off a huge week for the tournament, having already announced that seven-time Grand Slam champion, Venus Williams, will compete in Auckland this summer. The field is shaping up to be even stronger than the impressive line-up assembled for this year’s edition; and with the prospect of another superstar final as seen with Williams and Ana Ivanovic earlier this year, tennis fans are sure to be salivating.

2014 has seen Wozniacki come back in emphatic style. An impressive campaign saw her reach the semi-finals in Dubai, Monterrey, Eastbourne and Cincinnati. The Dane captured her 22nd career title in Istanbul, before ending her two-year Grand Slam final exile when she met best friend, Serena Williams, in the US Open decider.

“To sign Wozniacki and Williams in the same week is not a bad week in the office!” says Tournament Director, Karl Budge.

“Caroline has had a huge year and will come to Auckland in red-hot form following her impressive run at the US Open.”

Her rich vein of form will be rewarded next week with a place in the presitgious WTA Tour Finals as one of the eight best players in the world, playing alongside the likes of Serena Williams, Maria Sharapova and Ana Ivanovic.

The increadibly fit Wozniacki will also compete in next month’s New York Marathon.

“The 2015 ASB Classic is shaping up to be an incredible tournament with another top class player signing. It’s a sure sign of the tournament’s quality when we can confirm a player of Wozniacki’s world-beating ability and high public profile,” says ASB Chief Executive Barbara Chapman.

With two of the biggest names in women’s sport already confirmed, as well as rising stars Sloane Stephens and Ana Konjuh, the 2015 ASB Classic is set to be bigger and better than ever.
