Kiwi comics destroy world record for chart-topping podcast

New Zealand comedians Guy Montgomery (Billy T winner, 7 Days) and Tim Batt (Radio Hauraki, 7 Days) have broken the world record for repeat viewings of Adam Sandler’s 2013 film Grown Ups 2 for their chart topping podcast The Worst Idea of All Time.

The podcast follows Montgomery and Batt in their noble pursuit to watch and review the film once a week for a calendar year. To date, the pair have spent over 60 hours watching the ‘chronically mirthless’ (Empire) Grown Ups 2, making them the current world record holders at 35 repeat viewings as of October 2014.

Batt says “There is just no way anyone has spent more time with the movie than us. Not fans, not Adam Sandler, I’ll bet not even the film’s editors.” When asked to verify the official world record claim while he guest-hosted on the podcast, film critic Dominic Corry affirmed, “Uh, ah, yes... unofficially.”

“This never was a thing that anyone has done before or that anyone wanted to do because no one should do it, because it’s stupid” says Rose Matafeo (Jono and Ben At Ten, 7 Days). “But you guys have deemed it with meaning. You’ve actually turned something horrible into a beautiful thing.” Grown Ups 2 has a score of 7% on the film review website Rotten Tomatoes. The podcast has been downloaded over 50,000 times since it started in February this year.

While not yet recognised as an official world record by Guinness, Montgomery and Batt remain confident they have viewed the film more times than anyone else, and challenge any persons believing they have bested their record to come forward.

The Worst Idea Of All Time podcast can be heard on iTunes.
The podcast also has a popular Facebook page.
