Lightbox unveils first drop of local content

Lightbox unveils first drop of local content

Just in time for the weekend, new online TV service Lightbox has added a raft of New Zealand-made TV shows to its line-up.

Shows from local producers arriving this weekend include bro’Town, Nothing Trivial and The Jaquie Brown Diaries. In addition, Jane Campion’s stylish, unsettling detective miniseries Top of the Lake – filmed in and around Queenstown – is also coming to Lightbox.

Head of Programming Maria Mahony says, “Lightbox aims to offer the best in each category and, as a home grown service, one category we have always been keen to carry is New Zealand-made television.

“We want to build a comprehensive collection of shows that represent the depth and variety and weirdness of the New Zealand imagination and that tell local stories that need to be told. This latest drop of shows is our first step down that path.”

Fact-based series and mini-series about historically and culturally important topics are among Lightbox’s New Zealand-made offering, including Clare starring Robyn Malcolm, a retelling of the malpractice scandal exposed at National Women’s Hospital in the 1980s.

In the genealogy series Here To Stay, noted New Zealanders such as Michael Hurst, Frano Botica and the late Ewen Gilmour find out more about their tupuna. And handy heritage wisdom is handed down in The Garden Pantry which shows how to grow fruit and veg in the average Kiwi backyard.

Those in search of classic Kiwi laughs can feast on all five seasons of the one and only bro’Town or James Griffin’s popular pub quiz rom-com Nothing Trivial or chuckle along with The Jaquie Brown Diaries.

And it wouldn’t be New Zealand television without some truly rad ‘kidult’ and fantasy shows.

For youngsters, Lightbox has charming drama series Being Eve (featuring a young Fleur Saville), Margaret Mahy adaptation Maddigan’s Quest (featuring a young Rose McIver), and award-winning mystery Kaitangata Twitch, filmed in Mahy’s hometown of Governors Bay.

For those who like being creeped out, the Tem Morrison-fronted Mataku uses Maori tikanga and legends to tell spooky ghost stories.
