Shearing Great Fagan Wins Again
Veteran Fagan makes a
point at Pleassnt Point
Shearing icon David Fagan today again proved the other side of 50 is no bar to knocking off the odd victory every now and then by today by winning his 629th open title
Aged 53 and in his 33rd season of Open-class shearing, Fagan travelled south from his King Country home to blow the best of the south away in the Pleasant Point Gymkhana Shears final by shearing his 15 sheep in just 13min 52.81sec and also scoring the best quality points in pen judging.
On a shearing stand erected in the South Canterbury town’s main street, which was closed to traffic for the day, the multiple World, Golden Shears, New Zealand and British champion beat runner-up and newly-acclaimed Master Shearer and Canterbury hope Tony Coster by 1.19pts.
Runner-up to 2010 World champion Cam Ferguson, of Waipawa,at the New Zealand Spring Shears in Waimate and the Hawke’s Bay Show’s Great Raihania Shears last month, Fagan’s last win was his 14th Royal Welsh Open title during the Elders Primary Wool New Zealand team UK tour in July.
Fagan’s first Open win was in 1983, and by the end of that year he had won more than 10 times, including his first Golden Shears title win (an invitation Lambshear) and victory in the British Open final.
