Project in Wellington This Week Puts Dance in a Box

Wellington Integrated Dance participants/dancers are taking up a unique challenge this week to create inclusive contemporary dance-theatre works performed inside a box.

Following a successful pilot project in Auckland earlier this year, Touch Compass Dance Company’s DanceBox project takes place in Wellington from 16-18 November.

Six dancers in Wellington will take part in the three-day workshop to develop pieces performed within the confines of a two-metre cube box.

Two of the works will be filmed and uploaded online for others to join the conversation and the works will be part of the Touch Compass Dance Company’s 2015 season.

Touch Compass artistic director Catherine Chappell says DanceBox brings diverse dancers together to exchange and share stories in a creative and physical way.
The project uses dance, music, performance and film to shine light on “those profound moments when life reveals itself to the person living it as you question your identity”.

Ms Chappell said the DanceBox project ties in with Touch Compass Dance Company’s philosophy of questioning who can dance and bringing dance out of the theatre and into people’s lives.

“We want people to join in the conversation and comment on the different works.” The workshops include Touch Compass professional dancers and themes for the dance works are drawn from key moments in the dancers’ life.’

The Wellington DanceBox project is an extension of Touch Compass Dance Company’s successful Auckland project which featured in the company’s Acquisitions ’14 season performed in August at Q Theatre.

“So often dance takes place on stage in a theatre, but last year we took it to the streets and this year, we’re taking that one step further and taking it online to engage with as many people as possible.

Touch Compass Dance Company is an inclusive dance with disabled and non-disabled performers and has been presenting their work throughout New Zealand for 17 years.

The Touch Compass DanceBox project is supported by Creative New Zealand and the Ministry of Social Development.
