Orchestra Wellington presents Baby Pops: Anchors Aweigh

Orchestra Wellington presents Baby Pops: Anchors Aweigh

Wairarapa College, Masterton

3pm Saturday 22 November

Michael Fowler Centre, Wellington

3pm Sunday 23 November

Orchestra Wellington sets out for high seas and pirate adventure with "Anchors Aweigh," the latest in its series of Baby Pops education concerts. Young swashbucklers will sing along with sea shanties like "A Pirate's Life For Me" and "Blow The Man Down," and learn about the instruments in "Yo-Ho-Ho and A Bottle of Rum,” where our pirate players show their mettle.

Audience participation looms large in the programme, as young pirates conduct along with Maestro Marc Taddei, and whisper the voice of the Ghost in a new story for orchestra, "Give Me My Bone!” by Education Composer-in-Residence Thomas Goss.

Mayhem and skullduggery abound in this programme created by Goss especially for
Orchestra Wellington. Come dressed in your best pirate costume, and win a chance to participate up on stage. But don’t worry, the whole audience gets to walk the plank — right through the orchestra!

This will be Thomas Goss's second time presenting Baby Pops, after hosting "Baby Pops - Back to the Farm" earlier this year. After composing, scripting, and arranging these programmes annually since 2007, Goss now takes on the mantle of presenter to offer us Cap'n T, "the scurviest sea-dog ever to introduce an ‘Arrr-chestra’."

Incidentally, Goss has a family connection to piracy. He is related to that scourge of the Caribbean Sea, Captain Henry Morgan, who once invaded the city of Panama. This more humble descendant has no such dastardly goals, but would be happy just to take Masterton on Saturday November 22nd and Michael Fowler Centre on Sunday November 23rd. Be warned!
