New Zealand Spirits Win in Big Hong Kong Trade Show

Locally made Vodka, Gin and Rum have won Silver Medals at the prestigious Hong Kong International Wine and Spirits Fair.

“The Waiwera Group was the only New Zealand exhibitor at the show,” says CEO Lloyd Brown, “so it was really gratifying to see our Mahurangi Gin and Waiwera ‘Spiced Gold’ Rum, Spiritual Vodka all win silver medals. It was all about giving an international audience a real taste of New Zealand as well as a taste of our unique handcrafted products.”

There were more than a thousand exhibitors from 38 countries, nearly 20,000 buyers, and 31,000 visitors at what has been described as “Asia’s premier wine event”.

“We are very pleased with our awards, and considering how different our products are; we are not 'just another brand’, our products are batch produced with the pure and natural ethos of New Zealand in mind,” he says.

Mahurangi Gin is distilled using New Zealand grape spirit that is carefully distilled in our own pot and batch rectifying stills, blended with Waiwera Artesian Mineral Water, filtered through coconut charcoal 'gravity filtration system’ . Infused with natural and organic botanicals sourced, as far as possible, from New Zealand. This is a traditional style of Gin that is on the lighter side and lends itself perfectly to being served over ice with a slice of New Zealand lemon and some Waiwera Sparkling Artesian Mineral Water to top.

Waiwera 'Spiced Gold' Rum is fermented with Champagne yeast, using Organic Muscovado Sugar. The rum is then pot distilled and batch rectified to create a smooth spirit, suitable for sipping. Infused with natural and organic spices creating a sipping style of rum that is full of flavor and unique to New Zealand. Waiwera 'Spiced Gold' Rum is the only rum that is made in New Zealand starting with raw ingredients to the final product.

Spiritual Vodka is made using the finest grain spirit, blended with Waiwera Artesian Mineral Water and filtered twice through our coconut charcoal 'gravity filtration system', with an addition of Manuka Honey to create a smooth and flavourful style of traditional vodka. Some brands of vodka will use other ingredients to make their product smoother, Waiwera choose a natural alternative that brings back the traditional vodkas of Eastern Europe, when honey was the sweetener of choice. Manuka Honey gives Spiritual Vodka a special New Zealand touch.

“This effort has really paid off,” according to Lloyd Brown, “not only in the form of medals but also in securing some exciting overseas export opportunities with the likes of Hong Kong, China, Singapore, Australia and parts of the Americas.”
