Marae Model Confirmed

Marae Model Confirmed

Waikato-Tainui Te Kauhanganui has confirmed the Marae Model as the tribe’s new governing structure.

The decision, which was taken at a Te Kauhanganui hui on Sunday 23 November 2014, follows a 20-month review of Waikato-Tainui governance and representation arrangements and a referendum held during October to identify the model preferred by tribal members.

Confirmation of the Marae Model aligns with the referendum results which saw 72 percent of voters opting for that model.

Te Kauhanganui chairman, Maxine Moana-Tuwhangai, said Te Kaihanganui was pleased to have settled on a preferred model and thanked the Sponsor Group and Working Party for their foresight and guidance with this important kaupapa.

She said the Marae Model would become operational when the rule changes associated with the new structure were finalised.

Co-chair of the Governance and Representation Review team, Nanaia Mahuta, acknowledged Te Kauhanganui and tribal members for their willingness to seek the type of change that would accelerate the tribe’s prosperity aspirations.

“The Marae Model is a step change that we believe will significantly advance tribal development. It prioritises skills and capability, efficiency, effectiveness, outcomes and progress and has the potential to springboard Waikato-Tainui to even greater social, cultural, educational and economic success,” said Ms Mahuta.
