Local golfers given chance to win a place in BMW New Zealand Open

Keen local golfers in the Queenstown area and Cromwell are being given the chance to win a coveted place in the amateur field of the BMW New Zealand Open – thanks to Michael Hill Jewellers.

A special golf day sponsored by the Arrowtown-based jewellery entrepreneur and keen golfer will be held at Arrowtown, Queenstown (Kelvin Heights), Wanaka, Cromwell, Kingston and Glenorchy courses on Saturday February 21 2015.

In a ‘first’ for the event, everyone who enters at each of the golf courses on that day – male or female -- will go into a draw to win a golf experience of a lifetime.

Each club can decide who plays – although the winner must have a registered handicap with New Zealand Golf of no more than 18 (men) and 20 (women).

The prize – including a minimum of two days’ play at The Hills and Millbrook courses alongside a professional – will be drawn across all six clubs at 6pm on competition day.

The experience of playing inside the ropes in the biggest golf tournament held in New Zealand for many years will be priceless.

“It’s one of those experiences -- to play in our national open, watched by thousands, alongside some masters of the game -- that most golfers can only dream of,” said Michael Hill Marketing Manager Jamie McDougall.

“I’m sure that lucky golfer’s friends and family will be following their progress and cheering them on all the way, especially when they’re coming down the final fairway in front of the crowds.

Mr McDougall said Michael Hill was “thrilled” to be able to give one lucky local the chance to win a spot in the BMW New Zealand Open.

“Michael’s a keen golfer himself and he very much appreciates the support the Open has received from all these local clubs over the years as he has developed The Hills course and fought to stage and keep the tournament in Central Otago.

“He knows that without that support of grassroots clubs the event simply wouldn’t happen. Not only do local golfers attend the tournament, help caddy for the 280 players in the field and perform a wide range of volunteer roles, but they’re the event’s best ambassadors throughout New Zealand and around the globe.

“We’re delighted to be able to give back to our community.”

The 2015 BMW New Zealand Open will be held at The Hills and Millbrook Resort in Queenstown from March 12-15 2015. It is a sanctioned Tier One event on the PGA Tour of Australasia and the prize pool of tournament prize money has increased to a new level of one million dollars, solidifying the championship as one of the pre-eminent golf tournaments in the Asia-Pacific region.

The tournament will be broadcast live in New Zealand by Sky Television and also in Japan to eight million homes through the Japan Golf Network, showcasing New Zealand and Queenstown at its very best.
