Tekapo Canal Remediation up for Engineering Excellence Award

Tekapo Canal Remediation in the running for New Zealand Engineering Excellence Awards

The team behind the Tekapo Canal Remediation project has been selected as a finalist in this year’s New Zealand Engineering Excellence Awards.

“We’re thrilled to hear we’re finalists in the awards. This was a challenging project that required several work streams to happen concurrently in order to achieve a successful outcome within two summer construction periods,” Albert Brantley, Chief Executive of Genesis Energy said.

“Being selected as a finalist is great news. This was a challenging project with many different facets to it. However we achieved a great outcome, finishing below budget and 18 days ahead of schedule. We were also especially pleased with the zero lost time injury record of the project,” he said.

Genesis Energy carried out the engineering design, tendering, consultation and consenting requirements all in tandem. The project incorporated expertise from seven countries around the world to help Genesis Energy manage different aspects of the repair to the canal.

The relocation of trout, salmon and native fish captured from drained sections of the canal and the installation of a PVC geotextile liner were two of the more unique aspects of the project.

“The New Zealand Engineering Excellence Awards have been running since 2005 and were created to acknowledge outstanding leadership and innovation in New Zealand engineering,” explains Kieran Devine, Interim Chief Executive of IPENZ, one of the eight partner organisations hosting the awards.

“This year we have 19 finalists in the Projects, People, and Practice categories of awards and six other finalists for community engagement and safety in engineering. Being selected as a finalist is a great achievement in itself – it’s going to be tough on the judges!” Kieran adds.

The awards take place on Friday 28 November 2014, with winners being announced that evening at the Pullman Hotel in Auckland. Well-known TVNZ presenter, Miriama Kamo, will host the evening.

Details of the NZEE Awards finalists, along with a range of videos displaying their work, can be found at www.nzeeawards.org.nz.

The Awards are run by the Institution of Professional Engineers (IPENZ) on behalf of the Institute of Public Works Engineering Australasia (IPWEA), Electricity Engineers’ Association (EEA), Association of Consulting Engineers New Zealand (ACENZ), Civil Contractors New Zealand, Water New Zealand and the New Zealand Council of Engineering Deans and the Cement and Concrete Association of New Zealand (CCANZ).
