LADI6 – RETURN TO AFRICA: PART TWO

Close the door and come on in

I got skin I’d like to wrap you in

Folds and folds of love exposed creates an earth

Between a guy like you, and a girl like me. Rebirth.

Ladi6 – ‘Ikarus’

This Saturday sees the much anticipated release of ‘Ladi6 – Return to Africa’, Oscar Kightley’s worlds-colliding documentary that follows his cousin Ladi6’s return journey to Africa. The 24-minute doco captures an epic adventure for Ladi6 and her family, one that sees her connect with musicians in Tanzania to retool tracks from her award-winning album Automatic and collaborate with African artists Nonku and Lavish at Red Bull Studios Cape Town.

In the latest clip to reveal more details of her return to Africa, we see Ladi6 recreate her song Ikarus’ with the help of father/son guitar and violin combo, David and Ray Sengenge, with Joel Swai on drums.

Hearing the track for the very first time (and straight off Ladi6’s phone), Ladi6’s new pickup band immediately lock into a groove as their Kiwi collaborator sings the song’s sweet sentiments – all recorded in the intimate surrounds of their family living room in the city of Arusha, Tanzania.

“For me, music is fun and music is love, so having you guys here jamming together is a very good thing.” – Ray Sengenge

Collaboration has been key to Ladi6’s esteemed musical career.

‘Ladi6 – Return to Africa’ elevates this spirit of collaboration to a whole new level, as Ladi6 meets and jams with local musicians in every place she visits, building a Kiwi-African musical alliance with friends, old and new.

Audiences around the world will have their first opportunity to witness Ladi6’s journey of new musical exploration and creation when ‘Ladi 6 – Return to Africa’ is released on November 29.
