Hawke’s Bay the setting for special movie

Hawke’s Bay the setting for special movie

Next Sunday (7 December) MTG Hawke’s Bay is screening Uenuku, one of renowned film director Geoff Murphy’s earliest productions.

The screening is part of December’s public programme for MTG Hawke’s Bay’s exhibition Whetu Tirikatene-Sullivan –Travel in Style. It was filmed at Waimarama, the base at that time for Murphy and cinematographer Alun Bollinger. The supporting cast were members of the Waipatu Maori Club.

Uenuku was first screened as a television drama in 1974. It was the first Maori legend adapted for television, and is also notable for being one of the first programmes recorded in Te Reo Maori for New Zealand television.

Uenuku is a short drama depicting the story of the Maori god of the rainbow, and his pursuit of the mist maiden Hinepukohurangi. The lead actress, Aroha Gallo, was one of Whetu’s favourite models in the 70s.

The preservation of the language was a subject close to Whetu’s heart, and it was in this spirit that Uenuku was included in the exhibition’s public programme for this month.

Uenuku will screen at 3.30pm Sunday 7 December at the MTG Century Theatre. Tickets cost $5.

Other Travel in Style special events are:

A floor talk at the Travel in Style exhibition with Chanel Clarke, Curator Māori at Auckland Museum and a specialist in Māori dress and textiles. Floor talk, 2pm Sunday 7 December. Included in MTG entry charge ($10 adults, children free) or free with Travel in Style programme ticket.
