Amy shoots to the top again

Amy Fowler

Third Year UCOL Bachelor of Applied Visual Imaging student Amy Fowler has topped off an amazing award-winning year by claiming first place in the Tertiary & Assistants Photography category in the annual Canon EYEcon Photography Awards.

Her portfolio of images was described by the judges as "Very striking imagery, a stand-out winner", "Beautifully lit, the use of imagery with a minimalist colour pallet definitely caught our eyes", "Very impressive - the link between the concept and actual work was strong and shined through".

The body of work included an image that helped win her the title of Student Photographer of the Year, for her second year in succession, at the annual Epson / NZIPP Iris Professional Photography Awards in August.

As the 2014 winner of the Tertiary & Assistants category, Amy will receive a prize pack unlike any other. A combination of cash, subscriptions, Canon products and a full day on location with each of the four EYEcon mentors, makes it the most substantial prize for a competition at this level.

Third year UCOL BAVI student Stefan Simons came second in the Tertiary & Assistant Photography category.

Of Stefan's entry, the judges said: "The fish image in the jar was a standout print and was one of the best in the competition", "A lot of thought and production has gone into the creation of the images", "Nice composition – the way the horizons line up is very clever", "Print quality & presentation was of a very high standard".

For his prize, Stefan receives Canon products and annual subscriptions to NZIPP and AIPA.

As the winner’s training Institution UCOL receives $2000 prize money. UCOL BAVI students have won the EYEcon Tertiary & Assistants Photography category for the past six years in succession.
