Logistics firm transports prizes nationwide

After the Alan Duff Charitable Foundation, now known as Duffy Books in Homes, was formed in 1994 its first major supporter was global logistics business Mainfreight.

In addition to sponsoring 68 of the 519 schools involved in the programme, Mainfreight provides a rent-free office, allowing the charity to direct more of its funding towards books which make their way into the hands of more than 100,000 children in low-income communities nationwide.

One of Mainfreight’s most anticipated contributions to the Duffy programme is the annual Mainfreight Award for Excellence in Attitude.

Each year a senior student in each Duffy school is awarded a high quality reference book, cup and certificate signed by Bruce Plested, Mainfreight’s Executive Chairman. Many schools choose to make this their major end of year prize for departing students.

This year’s book prize is the DK Complete Atlas of the World: The Definitive View of the Earth by DK Publishing. The book lets readers cross the globe from their armchair with 330 maps, including 100 city plans showing the world's political and physical geography in the clearest way possible.

Representatives from Mainfreight, Daily Freight, Owens and Chemcouriers are invited to visit schools and help present the award – an opportunity which they all relish.

Since the initial relationship, in which Mainfreight sponsored books which were given to children in low decile schools, the firm has increased its support of the programme and has become a major sponsor of the literacy initiative.

Bruce Plested is not only Chairman of Mainfreight’s Board of Directors but also heads the Board of Trustees of The Alan Duff Charitable Foundation. Last month he won the Deloitte Top 200 Visionary Leader 2014 Award

Linda Vagana, General Manager of Duffy Books in Homes, believes that Mr Plested’s support has been a key factor in the charity’s success. “It’s been invaluable to us to have had Bruce’s support for such a long period. We’ve been able grow and improve just like Mainfreight has over the last 20 years,” she said.

Since it was founded in 1994 the Duffy Books in Homes programme has grown to encompass 519 schools and 227 early childhood centres with more than 100,000 students and 200 sponsors in 2014. In July this year the programme gave away its ten millionth book and celebrated 20 years of operation.
