CREATIVE NEW ZEALAND MEDIA RELEASE (for immediate release)

Artist in Residence opportunity at National University of Samoa 2015

Creative New Zealand, in partnership with the National University of Samoa, is offering a three month artist residency in Apia, Samoa, in 2015.

The annual residency, established in 2006, offers New Zealand Pasifika artists the opportunity to develop their potential, skills and practice. It provides up to $15,000 for an artist’s stipend including accommodation and travel costs.

The residency will run during August to October 2015. It is open to established mid-career and senior Pasifika artists who are resident in New Zealand.

Residency support

Creative New Zealand will offer the selected artist financial and other support of:

• a total stipend of NZ$10,000 for three months

• up to NZ$2,000 towards travel costs; including one return airfare – New Zealand to Apia, Samoa (as well as internal New Zealand flights as required) and insurance

• up to NZ$3000 (being no more than NZ$1,000 per month for three months) towards the costs of accommodation in Samoa for the resident

• an orientation /briefing on the residency including local customs and conditions.

Applicants should provide a project proposal by the deadline of 5pm Friday 6 March 2015. There is no specific application form. As applicants develop proposals they should take into account that the material resources and technology freely available in New Zealand are comparatively limited in the Pacific.

The 2015 Creative New Zealand/National University of Samoa artist in residence will be announced by 30 June 2015.

Previous recipients of the Samoan Artist in Residence have been: multidisciplinary artist Shigeyuki Kihara, choreographer/director Lemi Ponifasio, actor/directorNathaniel Lees, the late curator Jim Vivieaere, playwright Fiona Collins, installation artist Tiffany Singh, and the VaHine Collective (Lonnie Hutchinson, Lily Laita and Niki Hastings-McFall).
