Swim with the fish before you eat ’em

Swim with the fish before you eat ’em

Visitors to this year’s ASB Auckland Seafood Festival will have the chance to do more than just eat seafood, thanks to a digital experience allowing them to interact with the virtual ocean and see themselves under the sea on a large screen.
Festival goers will be dodging sharks and swimming with schools of hoki thanks to an interactive augmenting reality experience providing a glimpse of deep water fishing.

The experience illustrates the steps taken to ensure Sealord hoki is sustainable and meets the requirements for the internationally-recognised Marine Stewardship Council (MSC) certification. The New Zealand hoki fishery has maintained the MSC’s high standard for sustainability since 2001 and has been certified a record number of three times.

The MSC ecolabel can be seen on certified sustainable fresh, canned and frozen fish in stores. Charlotte Connell, Communications Manager at the Marine Stewardship Council, commends Sealord for making such a strong commitment to sustainable fishing.

“Sealord is showing tremendous leadership. Their entire range of hoki products are proudly marked with our blue ecolabel, giving New Zealanders that extra assurance their seafood is sustainable. We’re proud of the hoki fishery, its population has more than doubled since it was first certified which is a testament to the excellent and innovative management of the fishery,” she said.

Sealord believes this innovative technology is the perfect way to communicate about sustainable fishing.

“We can’t take everyone out on our boats to see how we look after the sea, but we can bring the sea to the people,” said Public Affairs and Communications Manager, Alison Sykora.

“We have a generation of technologically savvy New Zealanders. One way to get important information to them is through creative use of technology.”

“New Zealand seafood lovers are making a sustainable – as well as delicious - choice and being at the Auckland Seafood Festival is a great opportunity to share this message with them,” she said.

WHERE: Experience #SeaintheCity in the main hall, next to the Electrolux Cooking Theatre each day of the ASB Auckland Seafood Festival.
