NZ won over Australia in voting flavour Zumba instructor

New Zealand won over Australia in voting flavour Zumba instructor.

Amelia Tan-Makhmalchi voted Australia and New Zealand flavour instructor 2014.

Amelia, a Malaysia born Chinese who has been living in New Zealand since 1995. With a folk dance background. She teaches Zumba four days a week under the Public Fitness and Wellbeing Trust.

As a migrant, she understands not everyone has much to go around and only asked participants to pay a small fraction to cover the hiring hall. At first she teaches twice a week and only had a small number of students the number grew to between 40 to 80 students per class. What she had created as simply a Zumba class has become something more amazing. To her surprise, females, who came to Zumba, began to bring their family, husband, mother, and children this was not what she expected.

She realised that people started forming friendships and especially for those who are new to Auckland or the country. They met new friends and gained confidence through the Zumba evening class by interacting with other people. A unique extended family where people belong.

As one of the participants who has attended Public Fitness and Wellbeing Trust Zumba for 20 months described how he had become more confident, cheeky and better health. He credited, all these to his flavour Zumba instructor Amelia Tan-Makhmalchi " thanks to my instructors and all the people and kids dancing together with me. I am feeling blessed with Amelia Tan-Makhmalchi ".
