Varney Ready for NZ SuperTourer Solo Charge

Varney Ready for NZ SuperTourer Solo Charge

Young Auckland racer Shaun Varney is determined to make his way up the grid when the BNT NZ SuperTourer sprint series recommences at Hampton Downs for the Rush Security Waikato 250 & Motorcup - January31st/Feb 1st.

Varney, one of the new recruits to the series, debuted at the Taupo endurance round in September and feels with three rounds now under his belt he’s ready to progress up the field.

“I think like anything, the more miles you get in these cars, the better you will go. Prior to Taupo I only did about 20 laps in the car so it was almost like getting thrown in the deep end,” says Varney.

"I learnt a lot over the three endurance rounds, it was a matter of getting to grips with the car and trying to get close to the guys in front. We struggled a little bit for reliability, but we’ve worked to rectify and eliminate those issues ahead of the sprint series.”

Varney who has previously raced in the NZ V8 Touring car series, says the NZ SuperTourer series is ultra competitive.

“The biggest thing in a NZ Supertourer is getting everything right all the time, getting a handle on the car in practice, then doing well in qualifying – the series is very competitive and close, that if you make a mistake or aren’t quite on your game that weekend it will hurt your chances.”

“We’ve done some testing just recently, and now I feel like we have a completely different car to what we had in the enduro’s so I’m really looking forward to getting out to Hampton Downs.”

“I don’t think there are any slow blokes in this class, everyone’s pretty quick. The cars are all pretty close, when you look at qualifying results from Pukekohe and Hampton Downs at the end of last year the top 10 were separated by less than a second.”

“It doesn’t really get much close than that.”

Shaun Varney’s NZ SuperTourer is supported by Simply Leasing, Fairview Windows and Doors, Wattyl, BTi Logistics, Markham Accountants and Penny Homes and Colin Waite Ltd.
