Don McGlashan Announces New Album “Lucky Stars”

Don McGlashan Announces New Album “Lucky Stars”, Available for Pre-Release Sale Throughout the 2015 Winery Tour

Iconic songwriter and musician Don McGlashan doesn’t need much introduction. One of New Zealand’s best known and highly regarded songwriters, McGlashan has penned many a song that more than a few New Zealanders would consider for the soundtrack of their lives

Having cut his teeth with bands Blam Blam Blam and The Mutton Birds, and music/theatre duo the Front Lawn, McGlashan has five entries in APRA’s 100 Best NZ Songs of All Time and two Silver Scroll wins (“Anchor Me” in 1993 and for “Bathe In The River” in 2006). The Mutton Birds hit it big in the UK with their records Envy Of Angels and Rain Steam & Speed (touted as “a minor masterpiece” by Q Magazine), and since then, Don’s recorded two solo albums to critical acclaim and toured extensively worldwide. His 2006 song “Bathe In The River”, sung by Hollie Smith, is one of the biggest NZ singles of all time.

One of the hardest-working musicians in the business, Don’s recently beenduetting live with his friends, Australian legend Paul Kelly and Brian Ritchie of the Violent Femmes, and last year he was part of the acclaimed Maori television documentary “Songs From The Inside”, where he and three other artists went into prisons to mentor inmates on songwriting.

All the while, Don’s been writing songs towards a new record, Lucky Stars, to be revealed this week (months before its general release on 17 April) with the commencement of the 2015 Winery Tour. Written mostly in a windswept bach on the Thames Estuary south of Auckland, Don had ideas of stillness and isolation in mind for the new album. “I thought it was going to be a solitary, quiet record,” Don says, “I wanted to hibernate”. However, the music got the better of Don. “Some of the songs that came out had their own ideas, they were much more positive and sociable.” The album was eventually recorded with a team of New Zealand’s finest musicians, working between Auckland’s Roundhead studio and more remote seaside locations. Judging by his career up to this point, Lucky Stars will be another stellar recorded work from Mr. McGlashan.
