Best of all worlds in Pukeiti excursion

Best of all worlds in Pukeiti excursion

26 January 2015

Exotic plants originating from afar and a taste of New Zealand’s pre-history will both be on offer at an event at Pukeiti on Sunday (1 February).

A three-hour guided walk will take particpants through the world-renowned rhododendron gardens and then deep into the surrounding rainforest and up to the summit of Puketewhiti, the hill overlooking Pukeiti.

The event is part of Pukeiti’s family-focused Explorer Day programme as well as New Plymouth District Council’s summer guided walks programme.

Pukeiti’s rainforest is a unique backdrop for its extensive collection of exotic rhododendrons. The track network takes in regenerating rainforest with remnant pockets of original growth and some ancient rimu trees.

Meet at the gatehouse at 10.30am and allow three hours. Wear a hat and strong footwear and bring lunch, drink and sunblock. The guided walk route is classed as ‘medium to hard’, but Pukeiti’s network of other paths includes options for all ages and fitness levels.

The guided walk is part of a year-round programme of free public events at Pukeiti, Hollard Gardens and Tupare, the three heritage properties owned and managed by the Taranaki Regional Council on behalf of the people of the region. For more information, see www.pukeiti.org.nz, www.tupare.info and www.hollardgardens.info. Social media users can also follow the three Taranaki Regional Council Gardens on Facebook (TaranakiRegionalGardens) and Twitter (@TaranakiRG).
