NZ Air Line Pilots remember Jack Mehlhopt

It is with great sadness that the New Zealand Air Line Pilots’ Association notes the death of Alfred Dennis (Jack) Mehlhopt.

Jack was in his 58th year of flying having won an RNZAF flying scholarship in 1947.

He has continually been an active proponent of flight instruction having been an officer in the Air Training Corps and gained his flight instructor rating in 1959.

Tirelessly working to promote aviation widely to anyone with an interest, Jack volunteered his instructor services to the South Canterbury Aero Club when it was in financial difficulties. He also held positions as Chief Flying Instructor and lead the formation of the South Canterbury Aviation Heritage Centre in unpaid roles, showing a dedicated enthusiasm rarely seen today. When asked why he gave so much he responded that he never forgot the support he received early on in his flying career, and believed he had a duty to make his own contribution. Over 300 pilots have gained their first solo under Jack’s steady tutelage.

In 2012 Jack was the recipient of the NZALPA Greg Vujcich Memorial Award which recognises instructors who have made an outstanding contribution to the aviation industry.

NZALPA on behalf of professional pilots and air traffic controllers would like to acknowledge that the void which remains after the loss of Jack Mehlhopt will forever be difficult to fill.
