Lovers of music are in for a rare treat when celebrated musician Nathan Haines reunites with jazz quartet DOG for a one off, live-stream concert.

Hosted by the School of Music at the University of Auckland, the free event will allow audiences to enjoy an evening of legendary sax duets, online, from anywhere in the world.

The upcoming ‘Nathan Haines meets DOG live-stream concert’ which takes place at the University, encourages audiences to get up close and personal with the renowned musicians, from the privacy of their own living rooms. People who register for the concert will be sent a link which will give them online access to the live show free of the expense and logistics of going out to a top jazz club.

London-based Nathan is an internationally renowned saxophonist, composer, producer, bandleader and vocalist with a body of work in multiple styles stretching back for more than two decades. A regular headline act at Ronnie Scott’s Jazz Club in London, the concert marks a reunion between Nathan and members of DOG whose collaborative history extends back into Auckland’s jazz scene.

DOG comprises acclaimed musicians Roger Manins (saxophone), Kevin Field (Piano), Olivier Holland (bass) and Ron Samsom (drums). All four members of the band also teach at the School of Music.

The concert’s repertoire will focus on duets for tenor sax in celebration of the creative potential unleashed when great horn players get together.

"We've been checking out legendary duets; Zoots Sims/Al Cohn and Sonny Stitt/Zoot Sims and there is something remarkable about two tenor players harmonising and egging each other on to great heights. Jazz music from this era seems to unite the listener and player in a common goal of having fun in friendly competition - and the artistry of the musicians seemed to connect with the audience in a unique way. It’s fantastic to be able to share this concert for free with audiences around the world,” says musician Ron Samsom.

Nathan, who was born into a musical home on the North Shore of Auckland, is the eldest son of jazz bassist and School of Music teacher Kevin Haines. Along with his brother Joel on guitar, the pair played major international jazz festivals with their father throughout New Zealand in the 1980s. In 1991 Nathan moved to New York to study, where he immersed himself in jazz, hip-hop and Latin music, all of which were have influenced his well-known musical style.

Nathan’s album The Poet’s Embrace was awarded New Zealand Jazz Album of the Year in 2013. The follow-up Vermillion Skies went on to win the 2014 New Zealand Jazz Album of the Year. His latest album 5 A Day was recently released to widespread acclaim.
