Williams On Brink of Championship Win

Williams On Brink of Championship Win

After yet another race win today in the NZV8 Touring Cars TL Championship, Auckland driver Kevin Williams sits on the brink of claiming the title in Sunday morning's race at Manfeild Autocourse in Feilding.

On an unrelentless winning streak since Pukekohe williams has a lead of 308 points over his closest rival Steve Taylor from Hamilton and sits poised to win the title with one round remaining at Pukekohe in April.

There are two races on Sunday at Manfeild and if he can maintain a buffer of over 300 points after race two on Sunday morning or 225 points after the Jason Richards Memorial Trophy race Sunday afternoon the experienced NZV8 driver will claim his first ever championship in the series and the most convincing one in it's history.

In the opening NZV8 Touring Cars race on Saturday afternoon, Holden TL driver Williams placed first ahead of Steve Taylor followed by Invercargill's Grant Molloy both driving Ford TLs.

In the NZV8 Touring Cars TLX category, Australia's Jason Bargwanna claimed the first win of the weekend at Manfeild extending his overall lead against Cambridge driver and defending champion Nick Ross.

The Toyota Camry driver crossed the line with a small but comfortable buffer of just over two seconds ahead of the Nissan Altima of Ross who was followed by Hamilton's Lance Hughes in a Holden Commodore.

Lower Hutt driver James McLaughlin who has moved up from the TL to the TLX category driving the champioinship winning Concept Motorsport Holden this weekend was turned around during the race by another driver while pursuing Hughes but managed to finish in fourth place ahead of Australian Scott Taylor in the Toyota.

The first race on Sunday morning is a top five reverse grid which will see McLaughlin starting on the front row alongside Taylor which will make for an interesting challenge with hard chargers Bargwanna and Ross trying to come through the pack continuing a season long dogfight over race wins.

The first race on Sunday will be at 11.04am with the Jason Richards Memorial Trophy in the afternoon at 2.22PM.

The trophy race is 20 laps and includes a mandatory pitstop and wheel change for the TLX category bringing a team element into the contest for the trophy.

Last year Jason Bargwanna won the trophy here at Manfeild whereas in 2013 Nick Ross won it at Taupo Motorsport Park.

Tthe competition between these two will be tough as well as between the othe TLX drivers and the entire field with the TL category having a slim but possible chance of lifting the prize due to the mandatory stop for the faster TLX cars.
