Greyhounds As Pets appeal week

Greyhounds As Pets appeal week: 22 – 28 February 2015

Can you lend the dogs a hand?

Greyhounds As Pets (GAP) is asking people to help greyhounds find a home after racing, by making a donation during its national appeal week.

The appeal, which runs from 22 to 28 February, raises awareness about the breed, as well as funds for ongoing veterinary and kenneling expenses. Events have been organized across the country including street appeals in both Auckland and Wellington CBDs.

“Greyhounds make perfect pets for most people,” says GAP programme director Jacqui Eyley.

“With a quiet temperament, great lead manners, short easy-care coats and soulful eyes they’re quite irresistible.”

The appeal week is a great opportunity for people to meet the dogs, often in unusual places, such as getting off the train, shopping for groceries or walking through the CBD.

“While greyhounds are more common now, there are still a lot of people who haven’t heard about them, and what great pets they make,” says Jacqui.

“People used to think greyhounds needed a huge amount of exercise, but a greyhound race lasts around 30 seconds so as long as they get a good daily walk, they’re happy to settle down and snooze away the rest of the day,” says Jacqui.

“Small fluffies are another concern and people are surprised to hear that more than half our greyhounds share their home with a cat, and the cat is often the boss.”

GAP has rehomed nearly 1400 greyhounds since the programme began in 2006. The adoption process is thorough – all dogs receive a full health check, de-sexing, vaccinations, micro-chip and temperament assessment before being matched to their new homes.

“We take great care in matching each person with their ideal pet. In fact, we’re a bit like a dating agency!” says Jacqui.

You can support these deserving dogs by making a donation to one of our collectors or online through Givealittle (http://www.givealittle.co.nz/org/gap). And if you’re thinking of getting a dog, why not come and meet a greyhound at one of our events – they could be just what you’re looking for.
