It’s a multi-million dollar winning streak

Media Release 13 February 2015

It’s a multi-million dollar winning streak

2015 is just six weeks’ old and already five major jackpot have been struck – which makes it one of the luckiest streaks for Lotto players in New Zealand’s history.

Proving every ticket has exactly the same chance of winning, this year’s winners come from every single part of the country. But five towns are looking particularly golden this year after each having a new a multi-millionaire in their midst – three in the North Island and two in the South.

Just three days into the New Year, a retired truck-driver from Pukekohe won $10.7 million with Powerball on a ticket he was given as a thank you gift by one of his best friends.

While the number of digits in his bank account is enough to make most people feel dizzy, the winner took it all in his stride and planned to keep life simple following his big win..

“The first thing I’m going to buy is some new jandals,” the winner said. “It’s about time I threw these old ones away.”

Just one week later a Nelson couple hit the jackpot and instantly found themselves $5 million richer. The die-hard Dolly Parton fans couldn’t wait to jump on a plane and treat themselves to the trip of a lifetime.

“We always talk about what we’ll do when we Lotto,” the winner said, “And I have always wanted to go to Dollywood, Dolly Parton’s theme park.”

Then just a few days later, a couple from Palmerston North won $6.5 million with Big Wednesday. The winners took a little longer to collect their prize, as they couldn’t quite believe it was real.

“I thought it was unlikely that I’d won the big one, so I tucked the ticket away so I could hold onto that excitement for as long as possible – that feeling of ‘what if’,” the winner said.

Then just two weeks’ later, lady luck paid another visit to the South Island, when a family syndicate from Hokitika won $6.5 million with Powerball. The winners were looking forward to helping family with their windfall.

“As long as family is happy and healthy, that’s the main thing,” the winner said.

“It’s quite a bit of money – so this will help everyone set themselves up. It’s a really good feeling to be able to help family,” the winner said.

Then the roll of winning continued into February, when last Saturday a MyLotto player from Whanganui opened an email that would lead him to a life-changing discovery – that he’d won $4.3 million with Powerball. The newly-minted sports fan didn’t have to think twice about how to spend his riches.

“I want to buy a nice, big flat-screen TV so I can watch the mighty Black Caps during the World Cup later this month,” the winner said.

So whether your dreams are new shoes, music, travel, family or sport – Lotto Powerball is helping make those dreams come true.

As well as the big jackpots, almost one million Kiwis from around the country have won a share of $50 million in prizes.

With the year off to such a lucky start, Lotto NZ is looking forward to finding out whether another lucky player will take home this weekend’s $4 million Powerball jackpot. Who knows, maybe Friday the 13th is not so unlucky after all?
