NZ shearer surges ahead in merino record bid

New Zealand shearer Stacey Te Huia has surged well ahead of the pace required to set a new merino record in Australia.

With temperatures soaring well over 30deg at Parkdale Stud, 36km northwest of Dubbo, NSW, the 36-year-old Te Huia, from Te Kuiti but based in Bathurst, has shorn 321 in the five-and-a-half hours to a late lunch in his bid to break the record of 513 set by Australia based New Zealander Dwayn Black 10 years ago. At the same stage of his record, Black had shorn 313.

Te Huia shore 105 in the third run of the day, compared with Black’s 98 in the same run of his record shorn in April 2005.

Black’s last two runs of the day were 99, and 101. Needing an average of just over 57 an hour throughout the day, Te Huia has now averaged 58.36 an hour and is on target to break the record in the last half-hour before the record bid ends at 9pm New Zealand time.
