Media Release: Whole House Reuse and Free Theatre Christchurch Present Children’s Puppet Workshop

Whole House Reuse and Free Theatre Christchurch have come together to present a unique children’s puppet workshop, creating puppets out of the salvaged materials of a red-zoned Christchurch home. In this workshop, children will explore techniques of animation and puppetry, and will construct their own puppets as part of the Whole House Reuse Project.

These puppets will be displayed alongside the other creations made for Whole House Reuse in a large-scale exhibition at the Canterbury Museum from 5th June – 23rd August 2015.

Animating and reimagining the house materials through puppetry, seemingly redundant materials are given another life.

Creating a legacy from what would have otherwise been wasted, Whole House Reuse presents a unique challenge to reuse every piece from a Red Zoned Christchurch home by transforming all the materials into functional artefacts. In association with Rekindle, this project is engaging people from around the country to celebrate the previous life of one home, and explore new possibilities for what is often considered ‘waste’.

Free Theatre Christchurch (est. 1979) is a professional theatre collective based in Christchurch, New Zealand, and the country’s longest running producer of experimental theatre. The Free Theatre works as an ensemble, conceiving work from an initial idea and developing it over a longer period of time, often working in spaces that are not conventional in terms of theatre. The company works with artistic collaborators from a variety of disciplines to produce completely new and original work that engages directly with time and place.
